Embassy Spokesperson Making Clear the Position in Response to Unwarranted Accusations Against China

2020-11-01 00:29

Recently, the US Ambassador to Slovakia made unwarranted accusations against China in an interview. The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy would like to response as following:

The American Ambassador said that China and other countries are using online disinformation to undermine democracy. But the truth is just precisely the opposite. China stands against the creation and spread of disinformation and sees disinformation as the common enemy of the international society. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, China has become a victim of disinformation. Some disinformation, created and spread by some certain countries on the basis of ideological stereotype and political intentions, has undermined the understanding between peoples from different countries by distorting facts and confusing the public. Therefore, China calls on the international community to jointly reject disinformation and promote a fair and just global atmosphere for the robust development of public opinion, so that citizens in all countries could have the chance to get real facts and true information.

As for the climate change, China is earnestly fulfilling its obligations in international environmental treaties and take active measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions. China has reached its 2020 carbon emission target ahead of schedule in 2018. Now, China aims to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. China is also an important contributor to the global climate governance. China is among the first signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and played an important part in the conclusion of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

It is the US whose per capita CO2 emissions is 3.3 times the global average and more than twice that of China. The US is also the world's largest exporter of solid waste and a major consumer of plastic in per capita terms. However, the US has not ratified international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, and has announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Those actions impeded global climate governance and environment protection. It would be welcomed by the international society if the US could also take its own international responsibilities and make earnestly contributions to global response in relevant fields.
